Publisher's description:
Thanks to Francesco Merloni's generosity, it has finally been possible to bring together in a single exhibition in Gentile da Fabriano's native town over forty of his works from museums throughout the world, together with other remarkable paintings (masterpieces by Michelino da Besozzo, dei Salimbeni, Jacobello del Fiore), drawings (Pisanello's and Giovannino dè Grassi's sketchbooks) and goldwork (the reliquary from Montalto Marche, and other pieces) from the Late Gothic to the Renaissance periods. The volume opens with the fundamental critique by Keith Christiansen, one of the leading da Fabriano scholars, and continues with an essay by the curators on the critical acclaim accorded to the master from the Marches in the modern era, and the intriguing history of the various collections. Each section of the catalogue documenting the hundred works on display contains detailed descriptions by specialists in the field, accompanied by quality images, and is introduced by a brief essay by Andrea De Marchi who reconstructs Gentile da Fabriano's superlative and varied artistic production from a chronological and topographical standpoint. The volume is completed by a section containing all the documents on this painter, a complete list of his works, biographies of all the Quattrocento artists featured in the exhibition who gravitated towards him, and a comprehensive, up-to-date general bibliography.
